#1 Traveling Companion
During the school year, students will be given the opportunity to self-select reading books based upon interests and reading levels. The expectation is that the choice novel becomes the student's number one traveling companion.
Students will be responsible for selecting a novel and submitting a choice project every quarter.
Only one class period per week will be dedicated for students to read the self-selected novel in class. Therefore, the majority of the reading will be assigned as homework. Students should spend, on average, 20-30 minutes per night or 140-150 minutes a week reading.
Although the majority of the reading will be completed at home, it is important that the student's novel make an appearance in class each day. Class assignments will require referencing the self-selected novel making it virtually impossible to complete the work without the book present. Also if a student should finish an assignment early, then he/she will be encouraged to use his/her time to read.
If the student is unprepared and fails to bring along his/her traveling companion on any given day, he/she will be presented with a consequence. A sour note will be sent home requiring a parent signature. The student will also be required to spend the next day's lunch period with Mrs. Burris making up the assignment.
